Philippines' ex-first lady Imelda Marcos to appeal court's graft ruling

Imelda Marcos

The Philippines' anti-corruption court on Friday ordered the arrest of former first lady Imelda Marcos after finding her guilty on seven counts of graft during the two-decade rule of her husband and former dictator, Ferdinand Marcos.

She can also elevate this latest case before the top court and post bail. She was sentenced 6 to 11 years in prison for each count and perpetually disqualified from holding public office.

Marcos said in a statement her lawyer is "studying the decision and he has advised us that he intends to file a motion for reconsideration".

The court has previously undone at least one case against Imelda, overturning a 24 year jail sentence in 1993 on graft charges.

Department of Justice and headed by former FBI director Robert Mueller", said the organizers in a release. Critics of the Mueller probe, including Whitaker, argue it has gone too far.

Imelda was also charged for having "financial interests" in companies while in office from 1968 to 1986.

Quilala explained that the amounts involved with the foundations vary, and it is hard to give an exact number because they used different currencies, namely francs and dollars.

Neither Marcos nor her lawyers were present at the promulgation of the decision.

She ran for congress and won while her appeal was underway. President Rodrigo Duterte counts the family among his supporters and has expressed admiration for Ferdinand Marcos.

Marcos is the widow of dictator Ferdinand Marcos and served as First Lady from 1965 to 1986.

A spokesman for the Philippine president indicated on Friday that Duterte will not intervene with the court on Imelda Marcos' behalf.

Panelo said while the Palace noted that there were "still legal remedies available" to Marcos, "this latest development underscores that our country now has a working and impartial justice system that favors no one".

"We treat this decision by the anti-graft court as a good reminder to all public servants that public office is a public trust and that we are all accountable to the people we serve".

The guilty verdict against Imelda is the first to hold her criminally liable for hiding stolen wealth in Switzerland using shell foundations.
