United Nations report on climate change sets off alarm bells

Act Now, Idiots: Everything You Need To Know About The UN Climate Change Report

The document will now act as a game plan for signatories to the Paris Agreement in how it will be possible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius in the coming years, requiring rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.

If temperatures rise even.5°C higher than the crucial point, almost all coral reefs would be wiped out, and nearly 10 million people would be affected due to sea levels rising.1 meters.

The 48th IPCC session in South Korea's western port city of Incheon brought together about 570 representatives from 135 countries and worldwide organisations, Xinhua news agency reported.

"I hope that governments and the public read this important document and begin the deep and concerted action required to avoid the serious impacts of reaching and exceeding global warming of 2.0 °C".

Former George Tech atmospheric-sciences professor Judith A. Curry described the report's conclusions as the "same old, same old", based on questionable climate models and not "new science or better ways of assessing uncertainty".

Nikki Haley resigns as United Nations ambassador
"She knows everybody on a very first name basis and they like her, except for maybe a couple, which is normal". President Donald Trump has accepted the resignation of Nikki Haley , the U.S. ambassador to the UN.

The IPCC's report, released today (Monday, October 8), shows the impacts of even 1.5° of warming are far greater than previously expected, but also that it's definitely still feasible to hold warming to that level, according to scientific research organisation Climate Analytics.

Although the report says that emissions would not be the sole contributor to temperatures above 1.5°C, the future rates of emission reductions will determine whether temps rise.

The UN report warns the most serious impacts of climate change could arrive as early as 2030 if carbon emissions aren't significantly reduced.

The Paris Agreement was adopted by 195 countries at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in December 2015, and created to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change.

If nothing is done, Earth can expect heat wave temperatures to rise by 3 degrees Celsius, more frequent or extreme droughts, an increase in deadly hurricanes and as much as 90 percent of coral reefs dying off - including the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, according to the report. "What we've done is said what the world needs to do", Imperial College London's Jim Skea, cochair of the IPCC panel, said at a press conference. Limiting warming to 1.5°C by making green changes in energy consumption, land and water use and transportation can help mitigate the potential damage to an extent.

Manny Machado crushes 2-run HR in Game 1 against Braves
The Los Angeles Dodgers chose to go with Hyun-Jin Ryu in their series opener against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. The Braves walked eight batters and hit another in their first Major League Baseball playoff game since 2013.

The world now pumps more than 40 billion tons of Carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year; the IPCC calls for that number to be cut by more than 1 billion tons per year over the next decade. And very, very soon, we're going to pass through that 1.5 threshold.

The report summary said renewable energy would need to supply 70 percent to 85 percent of electricity by 2050 to stay within a 1.5C limit, compared with about 25 percent now.

But the report said the efficacy of measures, such as planting forests, bioenergy use or capturing and storing CO2, were unproven at a large scale and carried some risks.

While more than 180 countries have accepted the report's summary, the U.S. (which is the second biggest emitter in the world) said that their acceptance of the report does not "imply endorsement" of the findings.
