Jeff Sessions hits back at Trump criticism

Jeff Sessions: US attorney general hits back at Trump

"It's sort of an incredible thing", Trump said on Fox News, bemoaning Sessions' failure to investigate a myriad of perceived injustices against Trump and his campaign. "However, no nation has a more talented, more dedicated group of law-enforcement investigators and prosecutors than the United States".

"While I have opposed numerous actions taken by Attorney General Sessions, it would be unacceptable for the president to fire him now in order to install someone willing to subvert the Mueller investigation", said Sen.

"The Dems are very strong in the Justice Department", he said.

Another element of Trump's bad week is his public feud with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and Scaramucci said he understands the President's frustrations even if he's not sure it's a good idea to be so public about it. But Sessions insists he has been in control of the DOJ since the day he was sworn in.

Gonzales's comments come days after Trump lambasted Sessions in an interview with "Fox & Friends" host Ainsley Earhardt that aired last Thursday morning.

One day after telling Fox & Friends he only gave Jeff Sessions the job because he thought he was loyal (during the same interview, he questioned Sessions' manhood), Trump mocked Sessions' rare response.

Allies, including Republican members of Congress have long advised Trump that firing Sessions - especially before the midterm elections - would be deeply damaging to the party.

The secretary of defence said the United States had "lost a man who steadfastly represented the best ideals of our country". I have had experiences, adventures and friendships enough for 10 satisfying lives, and I am so thankful.

That's in stark contrast to what he said in July 2017.

Trump also renewed his criticism of Sessions, blaming him for what he called corruption at Justice.

Since then, the investigation helmed by former FBI chief Robert Mueller has ensnared several high-profile Trump campaign operatives, most recently former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort.

He cited two former Federal Bureau of Investigation officials, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, who were sharply criticized in a Justice Department inspector general report in June for trading derogatory text messages about Trump.

Sessions went on to defend the department that Trump has subjected to months of withering attacks. Trump has repeatedly called the investigation a witch-hunt. His statement came moments before he was set to arrive at the White House for a meeting on criminal justice reform.

The president and his allies are trying to head off mounting talk of impeachment after he was implicated as a co-conspirator in two campaign finance violations by his former lawyer Michael Cohen.

That case was referred to authorities in NY by the special counsel's office.

He said if he was representing Trump , he'd be focusing all defense efforts on the Southern District and let the Mueller probe go. He's one of the longest-serving employees in Donald Trump's family real estate business.

Sessions, a former USA senator and early supporter of Trump's presidential bid, first drew the president's ire when he recused himself in March 2017 from the oversight of Mueller's inquiry.

There are some new signs, however, that support for Sessions may be weakening.

Trump wouldn't need to wait until his new choice for attorney general was confirmed by the Senate, which would be a hard fight. He told Bloomberg on Thursday that the door might now be open to hearings for a replacement.

Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who also sits on the Judiciary Committee, said that he thought the president is entitled to have somebody leading the Justice Department in whom he has confidence. "He took my job, and then he said, 'I'm going to recuse myself.' I said, 'What kind of man is this?'"

"We don't have time, nor is there a likely candidate who could get confirmed, in my view, under the current circumstances", said Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the chamber's No. 2 Republican.

"He's a quintessential Boy Scout".
