Iran to Open Lawsuit Against Washington’s Sanctions at UN’s Top Court

That all ended, though, when President Donald Trump abandoned the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, under which Iran had agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting sanctions on its economy.

Members of the International Court of Justice attend a hearing for alleged violations of the 1955 Treaty of Amity between Iran and the USA, at the International Court in The Hague, Netherlands August 27, 2018.

The renewed USA sanctions on Iran have already caused an economic breakdown and a plummeting in the value of the rial.

In the Netherlands on Monday, Mohsen Mohebi, the lawyer representing Iran, condemned the U.S. for "naked economic aggression" in the first session of the case.

Speaking on August 27 at the start of four days of hearings, a lawyer representing Iran, Mohsen Mohebi, told the court in The Hague that the us sanctions violate terms of the 1955 treaty signed by the United States and Iran.

Iranian representative Mohsen Mohebi told the court the USA decision was a clear breach of the 1955 treaty as it was "intended to damage, as severely as possible, Iran's economy". "Iran will put up the strongest resistance to the USA economic strangulation, by all peaceful means".

Washington reinstated the first batch of sanctions in early August and will re-impose the second batch in November which will primarily be meant to undermine Tehran's oil exports.

Rulings of the ICJ - also known as the World Court - are binding, but it does not have power to enforce them.

The top Iranian diplomat said Tehran would cooperate with Ankara to put off wildfire in the Iraqi part of Hour al-Azim wetland.

The United States has called the lawsuit "baseless" and accuses Iran of violating the 2015 agreement to scale back its nuclear program.

London-based lawyer Samuel Wordsworth, for Iran, told the court the measures were threatening Iranians' access to medicines as well as disrupting business deals.

Sanctions were lifted in return for Iran committing not to pursue nuclear weapons. He said they were needed to ensure Iran never builds a nuclear bomb.

The oral hearings will last for four days and a decision on Iran's request for a provisional injunction is expected within a month.

He said if he was representing Trump , he'd be focusing all defense efforts on the Southern District and let the Mueller probe go. He's one of the longest-serving employees in Donald Trump's family real estate business.

Iran's currency the rial has lost around half its value since April.

Iran and the USA have a history of litigation at the International Court of Justice, in cases covering crises including the embassy seizure and the shooting down of an Iranian passenger jet mistaken by a US warship for a fighter jet.

After years of diplomacy, the 2015 deal was signed by Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

In his executive order, Trump argued that the sanctions would turn up the financial pressure on Tehran to come to a "comprehensive and lasting solution" regarding activities that the worldwide community regarded as "malign" such as Iran's "ballistic missile program and its support for terrorism". That year it brought a suit at the ICJ against the freezing of around $2 billion of Iranian assets overseas which U.S. courts say should go to American victims of terror attacks.

The lawyers argued that the sanctions violated the 1955 Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations, and Consular Rights between Iran and the USA, which grants the ICJ jurisdiction over disputes.

He said Iran had sought a diplomatic solution to the countries' dispute but was rejected.

The US and Iran have clashed at the court in the past since they became enemies after Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution.
