Trump’s financial aid offer to farmers criticized as tax-funded ‘welfare’

Trump Offers $12 Billion Aid To US Farmers Hit By Tariff War With China

On Tuesday night, Trump issued a tweet proposing that both the US and the European Union drop all three as European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker prepares to visit Washington for trade talks on Wednesday.

Following talks at the White House, Donald Trump and Jean-Claude Juncker emerged to announce they had agreed to work together towards "zero" tariffs, barriers and subsidies. The U.S.is also in the middle of a trade dispute with China and is threatening to impose new tariffs on the European auto sector.

Juncker visited Washington on Wednesday to talk trade with Trump, who insisted on reciprocal trade relations with the EU.

They also said they would cooperate to reform the rules of the World Trade Organization, which the Trump administration frequently criticizes for favoring United States trading partners.

Trump has placed tariffs on imported steel and aluminium, saying they pose a threat to United States national security, an argument that the European Union and Canada rejects. China has retaliated with duties on soybeans and pork, affecting Midwest farmers in a region of the country that supported the president in his 2016 campaign.

Congressional Republicans are expressing deep skepticism of Trump administration's plan to bail out farms hit by tariffs, saying farmers want free trade, not handouts.

The move is said to be the dictatorship's first step towards fulfilling a pledge made to the US President Donald Trump in June . The North suspended long-range missile tests and blew up its main nuclear testing site as goodwill gestures.

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) said the punitive trade measures are "cutting the legs out from under farmers". Cherry producers also felt the pinch during their short cherry season, as they face an additional 25 per cent tariff in China.

The Trump administration is preparing a plan to provide billions of dollars in emergency aid to farmers who have been hurt by tariffs.

The president is meeting with European officials on Wednesday at the White House.

"A breakthrough has been quickly made that nobody thought possible!", he tweeted on Wednesday.

The Commission briefed European Union countries last week on the bloc's possible response to auto tariffs, saying in theory it could hit 9 billion euros of USA goods, according to European Union sources. Farmers in Iowa alone could lose as much as $624 million on soybean shipments to China, Donnelle Eller, an agriculture reporter with the Des Moines Register, told CBSN last month.

The Agriculture Department predicted before the trade fights that USA farm income would drop this year to $60 billion, or half the $120 billion of five years ago.

Weather: Likely some showers and storms overnight
Storms become more isolated and fewer in number by the end of the week with highs warming back to the lower 90s. Monday: Partly to mostly cloudy with scattered showers and storms and highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s.

Jean-Claude Juncker kept his right hand to his side and did not grasp hands with Mr Trump.

Gustavo Oliveira, now an assistant professor of environmental studies at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, said the soybean part of the US-EU deal was not surprising, coming on the heels of Washington's announcement of US$12 billion in subsidies for farmers to sustain agricultural prices.

In an interview with CBS News this month, Trump described the E.U.as a "foe". "We can also do stupid".

European Union representatives told me that they would start buying soybeans from our great farmers immediately.

The Agriculture Department was expected to announce the plan later Tuesday. But the taxes also exact a toll on USA businesses and consumers, which pay more for imported products. Danielson, whose farm is in Cadott, says almost 20 percent of the dairy products and around 50 percent of the soybeans he produces are exported. "To run this program, we need producers to harvest their crops", said USDA farm program official Brad Karmen, because payments will be based on this year's crops.
