Republican lawmakers launch move to impeach Justice Department's Rosenstein

Rod Rosenstein

The resolution on its own does not mean that the House is on the verge of voting to impeach Rosenstein, and conservative House members agreed Thursday morning to holding off on such a vote until after the August recess.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC also dismissed the possibility, saying it's "more likely" he'd end up "in the NBA playing basketball" than Rosenstein is to be impeached.

Justice Department officials have said they have provided the vast majority of information sought in subpoenas from two key House committees - and are almost done with providing all of the outstanding information requested in those subpoenas.

He also says Rosenstein's back-and-forth with congressional Republicans over document requests doesn't rise to the level of "high crimes and misdemeanors" that would warrant impeachment under the Constitution.

Democrats on the House Judiciary, Oversight and Government Reform and intelligence committees called the impeachment effort a "panicked and unsafe attempt to undermine an ongoing criminal investigation in an effort to protect President Trump as the walls are closing in around him and his associates". Rosenstein bristled when Jordan, the Ohio Republican, asked him why he was "keeping information from Congress".

The documents were released after several news organizations filed Freedom of Information Act lawsuits to obtain them. The 400 page warrant is heavily redacted and marks the first public disclosure of a highly sensitive FISA request .

"It's an uptick in their fabulously irresponsible effort to damage the critical institutions of this country in favor of defending the president", Himes, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said.

The White House was ambivalent about whether Trump supported the effort to impeach Rosenstein.

GOP lawmakers have threatened impeachment against the deputy attorney general on numerous occasions over the past few months.

Ryan also told reporters the Department of Justice has been making "tremendous progress" toward full compliance on releasing the documents lawmakers subpoenaed in March. But that could still be an uncomfortable vote for many Republicans who are under pressure from conservatives groups - and the voters who follow them - to unseat the man who oversees the investigation Trump routinely denigrates as a "witch hunt".

Rosenstein, along with FBI Director Christopher Wray, faced dozens of angry Republicans at a House hearing last month. It was a message to Trump, who has railed against the Mueller probe on a regular basis as the investigation gets closer and closer to him. "Just when you think you have seen it all, Republicans have no shame that they would go to a place where they would undermine our judicial system". Elijah Cummings, Md., Jerrold Nadler, N.Y. and Adam Schiff, Calif.

He added that the lack of a deal, while damaging for Britain, would provoke a backlash among British voters against the EU. Raab said: "Well, I think that's a rather irresponsible thing to be coming from the other side".

Rosenstein's refusal to recuse himself, plus his failure to appoint a second special counsel to probe his own department's handling of the Russian Federation investigation, warrants "impeachment and trial, and removal from office", the Republicans argue.

The impeachment articles stated that Rosenstein refused to appoint a second special counsel to investigate the surveillance of Carter Page.

"We want to make sure that we get compliance". They are claiming he stonewalled congressional oversight of the Mueller investigation.

In a statement, Meadows said Rosenstein's conduct is "reprehensible".
