Ariya Jutanugarn lost a seven-shot lead on the back nine, stayed alive with a par in the two-hole playoff and saved par with a bunker shot to win on the fourth playoff hole and capture the U.S. Women's Open on Sunday at Shoal Creek.

What might have been the most hard day of the 22-year-old's career ended with her winning Sunday's playoff against Hyo-Joo Kim and walking away $900,000 richer with a second major title.

South Korea's Kim closed with a five-under 67 to force the playoff and had two long putts to win in the extra session but couldn't get them to fall.

Former world number one Ariya roared past second round leader Sarah Jane Smith to finish with a 12-under 204 total as the tournament got back on schedule after heavy rains and lightning earlier this week resulted in a number of delays. She won the Women's British Open in 2016 and is coming off a victory at the Kingsmill Championship in May.

Carlota Ciganda (69) finished well back in outright third at seven under, four shots ahead of Danielle Kang (69).

But the Thai went through the green at the par-five 17th, duffed a chip and had to hole from six feet to only drop one shot. But his chances effectively ended when he missed a 3-foot par putt on No. 10, and he put his tee shot into a backyard for the second time this week.

"I haven't been in the position before, but I hope to show up like it's another day", Smith said. The second round will be completed Saturday with the low 60 scorers plus ties making the cut. "I don't know why". Kim was on the green in two, while Jutanugarn pulled her second shot into a bunker, and both walked away with a par. So it's nice to be able to feel like I'm seeing the greens really well and seeing some putts go in.

Smith tied with American star Lexi Thompson (70), Taiwan's Wei-Ling Su (72) and Thai amateur Patty Tavatanakit (71).

"I feel very good about how I played, especially that I did not have a bogey today in the final round". Lee fell back to 2 under with a second-day 75. I was sort of holing a lot of putts.

Ariya had looked poised to stroll to the title, padding her lead at the turn after starting the day four in front, but Faxon said the warning signs were there.

"I sent him a text message on Sunday and I said, I don't know what I'm doing".
