Microsoft’s effort to build underwater datacenter reaches next phase

Microsoft is doing a small token thing to make it look like it's trying hard to be environmentally sound, with the tech giant sinking a data centre into the sea off the cost of the Orkney islands to examine the benefits of using the ocean to keep its servers cool.

Project Natick is now in its second phase, with the initial part of the program having determined that underwater data centres are feasible through the deployment of a submerged facility off the coast of California in 2016.

The date centre now on the Scottish seabed is part of Microsoft's Project Natick. Microsoft's Project Natick team will monitor and record the performance of the datacentre over the next 12 months.

Microsoft won't share the cost of the Natick project, but the company believes that at commercial scale, this design will actually be cheaper than typical land-based data centers. More than half of the world's population lives within about 120 miles of the coast, and by putting datacenters in bodies of water near coastal cities, data would have a short distance to travel, leading to fast and smooth web surfing, video streaming and game playing as well as authentic experiences for AI-driven technologies.

Nadal's match with Schwartzman is postponed until 12.00PM on Thursday
He led 30-15 when play ended at 18:37 BST, returning at 11:00 BST on Thursday to wrap up the set and level in a matter of seconds. Nadal will next play 11th-seeded Diego Schwartzman , who rallied to beat Kevin Anderson 1-6, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (0), 6-2.

First, almost half the world's population lives within 150 km (120 miles) of the ocean and that having data centers close to computing hubs means smoother web surfing and less back and forth between users and servers.

Project Natick gets electrical power from a cable connected to a wind farm on the Orkney Islands, and that cable also serves as the conduit for the data processed under the sea. It is also far quicker to deploy a data center offshore than build on land.

The data center that went under is essentially a 40-foot long tank that's packed with 12 racks and a total of 864 servers.

In a bid to save the planet while making some money, Microsoft just drowned one of its data centers at sea.

Tidal turbines and wave energy converters will help power the data center, which is as powerful as several thousand high-end consumer PCs.

Keeping this in mind, Microsoft has designed the pod in a manner which wouldn't require maintenance for up to five years.

This wouldn't be the first time when Microsoft has tested this idea.
