Facebook has killed the hated Trending Topics bar

Facebook announced Friday that it will end its "Trending" news section next week.

In August 2016, four months after those stories were published, Facebook fired the entire team of Trending news curators.

It aligned with the pledge just a year earlier by Facebook chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, to make Facebook a "personal newspaper" for users.

Hardiman said the company is slowly taking steps to shift editorial decisions away from Facebook and toward news organizations.

In new reversal, Trump says he didn't fire Comey over Russia
The multi-page letter blasted Comey over his investigation of Trump's Democratic presidential opponent, Hillary Clinton . Trump informed Russian officials in an Oval Office meeting that he had fired Mr.

Facebook has occasionally gotten in trouble because of Trending, which could get confused and surface objectionable content and Fake News.

The operational and algorithmic surgery evidently did not have the desired effect. Facebook's Alex Hardiman explained, "So we're exploring new ways to help people stay informed about timely, breaking news that matters to them, while making sure the news they see on Facebook is from trustworthy and quality sources". The company is simultaneously experimenting with a breaking-news notification, a section dedicated to breaking local news, and a video feature for American users to watch live coverage and weekly reports.

Over 80 news publishers are now testing the "breaking news" label, which allows them to opt to flag their Instant Articles, mobile and web links, and Facebook Live video as breaking news, the company tells us. Indeed, in its announcement, Facebook noted that the way people consume news on Facebook is changing.

In many ways, those issues foreshadowed Facebook's more recent problems with fake news and political balance.

Google Will Try to Tackle Latest iPhones With Pixel Phone Upgrades
The current Pixel 2 costs US$50 less than iPhone 8, while the larger model costs US$50 more than the entry-level iPhone 8 Plus. It will also follow the iPhone X's lead by including a notch at the top of the screen to accommodate front-facing sensors.

One reason the feature is so little used could be that it's not immediately visible on Facebook's app or mobile version, where most people use the site.

Another feature, called Today In shows people breaking news in their area from local publishers, officials and organisations.

He said the Trending feature would be removed "soon".

Facebook is shuttering the much-maligned Trending topics section next week, noting it only accounted for 1.5% of clicks to news publishers in the five countries where it was displayed in the News Feed.

Simplii has been more specific on numbers, reporting that the crooks appear to have details on more than 40,000 of its customers. Simplii also says it moved quickly to implement enhanced online fraud monitoring and online banking security measures.

Hardiman provided some examples of what the site may replace the section with in the near future.
