Ardern names new-born daughter Neve Te Aroha

The NZSO released its performance on Thursday with a message to the prime minister's baby

They say everyone is in "good spirits" and that baby is "very cute".

Ardern is just the second elected world leader to give birth while holding office.

The world will get its first glimpse of the PM's baby Sunday before mum and dad leave hospital to take her home. At the time, she said she'd found out about the pregnancy just one week before her Labour Party formed government and that it came as a surprise to her, and her partner, as they believed they would not be able to conceive naturally.

Ardern, who said the couple kept a short list of names, added that Neve meant "bright and radiant and snow", while Te Aroha was the name of a rural town some 140 kilometres (90 miles) southeast of Auckland where her family is from.

"We've gone for simplicity, because Clarke with an "e" has caused all sorts of problems, and Jacinda with a "d", she said.

Sixers trade 39th pick in NBA draft to Lakers
For over a year, conventional wisdom was that George would head to Los Angeles to be a Laker when he hit free agency. The draft is only a few minutes from getting underway and there could be a little more clarity once it's over.

Neve is Ardern's first child and she weighed in at 3.31kg when she made her way into the world at 4.45pm on Thursday 21 June.

He plans to become the primary caregiver for the child when Ardern returns to work following a leave of six weeks.

The last leader to give birth while holding office was late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who had Bakhtawar in 1990.

"I won't forget the look on Jacinda's face when she finally held the baby", he said.

"We chose Neve because we just liked it, and when we met her we thought she looked like she suited the name", the 37-year-old told reporters as she cradled her daughter in her arms.

Ardern and Gayford are yet to name their baby but the Deswals named their girl Aayushi, which is a traditional Indian name meaning "long life". "Clarke's been as much of a role model here as I am", she said. Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has taken the reins as acting prime minister.

Tweeting her congratulations to Ardern and Gayford earlier in the week, former NZ Prime Minister Helen Clark said their parenting arrangements were gender-equality in action.

The Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia also sent a bouquet so large it could not fit in the Prime Minister's room in the maternity ward of Auckland City Hospital.

"So I hope for little girls and boys that actually there's a future where they can make choices about how they raise their family and what kind of career they have that are based on what they want and what makes them happy", she said.
