Retailer Gap says 'sorry' for T-shirt's incorrect China map

American clothing retailer Gap apologized for printing incomplete Chinese map on T-shirts for sales outside China

Gap, in a statement posted on Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter, admitted that a Gap brand T-shirt sold in some overseas markets "mistakenly failed to reflect the correct map of China". It also added that it would implement more rigorous reviews to ensure the same thing would not happen again.

In a statement the company said, "Gap Inc. respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China".

The apology was triggered by complaints from consumers reacting to pictures of a Gap-branded T-shirt posted on Chinese social media network Weibo.

Oil price falls as EU, Asia resist U.S. pressure
The report is the last one before the oil ministers' meeting in Vienna to discuss the oil production ceiling two weeks later. Crude oil production in March was around 3.76 million bpd, flat compared with the average levels in January and February.

Gap's apology comes as China has been increasing efforts to police language used to describe Chinese-claimed territories such as Taiwan.

USA clothes giant GAP said it was "extremely sorry" for selling a T-shirt with an "incomplete" map of China, after it was accused of being disrespectful to the country's territorial sovereignty.

The photos were taken at a Gap shop in Canada's Niagara region, China's state-owned Global Times said.

Gap is not the first worldwide brand to bruise China's long fingers and tender toes, but it has apologized just the same. "ORCRP006320-topic.html" class="local_link" >Gap is the latest company to apologize to China for failing to reflect Beijing's territorial claims - on a map shown on a T-shirt for sale in North America. "The related products were pulled off the shelves in the Chinese market and destroyed earlier".

China, which considers Taiwan a rebel province awaiting reunification, has taken airlines, hotels and other companies to task in recent months for listing the island as a separate country on their websites.

Most recently, the Chinese Civil Aviation Administration ordered a number of air carriers, including United States airlines, to identify Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as Chinese regions on their websites. However, the island has been governed separately since 1949 and maintains formal diplomatic relations with a handful of countries. China claims sovereignty as well to a large area within the South China Sea that includes areas other countries claim as theirs such as the Philippines and Vietnam.
