What Justice?: White Cops Who Murdered Alton Sterling Won't Be Charged

Attorney General's Office will not charge officers in death of Alton Sterling

After informing Sterling's family about his decision, Attorney General Jeff Landry told reporters that there was not enough evidence of criminal wrongdoing to bring charges.

Black Lives Matter activists announced Tuesday that they will hold rallies this week outside her office, and the local NAACP has asked the U.S. Justice Department to launch a federal investigation into the shooting.

Landry made the announcement at a news conference after meeting with family members of Sterling.

"They said they didn't find anything", she said.

Paul said they will review Landry's decision and provided the next steps in the case at this point.

Democratic Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said state prosecutors had followed the law in evaluating the case. I know the Sterling family is hurting.

Landry also said toxicology reports showed that Sterling had drugs in his system at the time of his death, which Landry linked to Sterling's behavior during his encounter with police.

White House denies Stormy Daniels' account of Trump affair and threats
Two former employees of the magazine told CBS News that Trump's attorney, Michael Cohen, threatened to sue the publication. Miss Daniels, 39, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, alleged at the time of the affair she was 27 and he was 60.

Landry did not take any questions from reporters.

An attorney for a white Baton Rouge police officer who shot and killed a black man during a struggle says he expects the city's police chief to fire his client.

Paul also said they need to have a hearing with each officer before any disciplinary action can happen.

Two Baton Rouge Police officers, Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II, responded to reports of a suspicious person outside a Baton Rouge convenience store, Triple S Food Mart, on July 5, 2016. After not complying, one officer tackled Sterling to the ground, while another pointed a gun at Sterling's head.

The shooting came amid increased scrutiny of fatal encounters between police and black men. Two cellphone videos of the shooting quickly spread on social media, leading to large protests.

"We will hold a news conference where we will release video footage from all body cameras, store surveillance, and vehicle cams".

Federal authorities opened a civil rights investigation immediately after the shooting.

United States destroyer sails near Beijing-claimed island in South China Sea
The first time that a US destroyer carried out a "freedom of navigation" operation under President Donald Trump, was in May 2017. China asserted that two People's Liberation Army Navy frigates warded off the USA vessel.

Landry said that Salamoni believed Sterling was reaching for a gun in his pocket before attempting to use a taser on him, with no success. "Sterling" - who he said was "under the influence" of "various illegal drugs". He tried to get up, authorities have said, and the officers ordered him back to the ground.

One of Sterling's aunts, Sandra Sterling, said Salamoni took an oath to protect and serve, not "protect and kill". They reported that Sterling had a gun in his pocket.

In May 2017, the US Department of Justice announced it would not press charges against the officers.

Attorneys for Sterling's relatives have said federal authorities told them Salamoni pointed a gun at Sterling's head and threatened to kill him before the struggle began. The caller said the man pulled out a gun.

After the shooting, the officers were placed on paid administrative leave. The officer shot him three times in the chest, investigators discovered. A day after Sterling's death prompted outrage and protests, an officer in Minnesota shot and killed Philando Castile, a school cafeteria worker, during a traffic stop, the aftermath of which was streamed live on Facebook. Moore's recusal left Landry's office to review evidence and decide whether any state charges were warranted.

The announcement makes Sterling's death the latest high-profile police shooting to end without charges for officers involved, following on the heels of federal authorities previous year declining to prosecute either officer in the case.

California sues Trump administration over citizenship question added to census
The Commerce Department's decision led to an immediate backlash, largely along political lines, after the announcement was made. But opponents say the question will discourage immigrants from responding to the census.
