Ex-Trump campaign head Manafort pleads not guilty in second case

Andrew Harnik | AP Paul Manafort President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman leaves Federal District Court in Washington Nov. 2 2017

Manafort, who was indicted in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, has pleaded not guilty in D.C. district court to conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money and making false statements, among other charges.

If convicted of bank fraud in Virginia, Manafort faces up to 270 years in prison, but prosecutors say federal sentencing guidelines call for much less time: four to five years.

"You need to go back to the optometrist", the judge replied, and ordered the Virginia trial to begin July 10.

Manafort's lawyer, Kevin Downing, said his "rosy glasses" hope was it would not begin until November, or after the Washington trial presumably had ended.

In a related case, Manafort last week pleaded not guilty and is set for a September 17 trial.

The Celtics (44-19) continue to hang their hat on defense, but their offense since the season resumed has been outstanding. The bench needs to prove that they can maintain this, but we are finally at a point where things are going to settle.

Separately Thursday, an April 4 hearing was scheduled before a federal judge in Washington in Manafort's civil lawsuit challenging Mueller's appointment as special counsel, which the government has moved to dismiss.

The charges are not directly related to election interference but revolve around Manafort and Gates's lucrative lobbying on behalf of pro-Russian political figures in the Ukraine.

Manafort is also accused of having altered a slew of financial statements connected to a consulting business he shared with partner Richard Gates. In court papers, prosecutors said they asked Manafort if he'd be willing to waive venue and have the case consolidated in the District, but he refused.

He faces up to 15 years on the charges of filing false tax returns and up to 20 years on the charges of failing to report foreign bank accounts.
