More than 100 schoolgirls missing after Boko Haram attack in Nigeria

Fears more than 100 missing schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram

The fact that Nigeria hardly learn from its experiences was brought to fore last week when the "technically defeated" Boko Haram insurgents invaded a female secondary school in Yobe State and carried away dozens of girls with the authorities, both in the state and Abuja, left in a state of utter confusion.

Many of those girls remain in captivity, though some have escaped or been ransomed.

It was gathered that the girls were abducted by the Musab Albarnawi faction of the Boko Haram which is loyal to the Islamic State of West Africa.

Abdulkadir Abubakar, a leader in the Abubakar Shekau led Boko Haram, has said he's seeking God's forgiveness after repenting from killing and kidnapping innocent Nigerians. But it is generally known now that 276 girls were trucked off by the Chibok assailants, who reportedly beguiled the girls to come on board for their safety.

The military was not available for comments last night.

He said based on the briefings from the Principal of the College, Hajiya Adama Abdulkarim, and the state commissioner for Education, Mohammed Lami, 906 students, out of whom 110 have not been accounted for, were in the school on the day of the attack.

While it appears that many students at the school did go into hiding, Manzo said those children are now back with their families.

Two policemen were killed in two separate attacks in Srinagar and Budgam district in Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces have cordoned off the area.

Families of the missing girls have slammed the government for what they see as a slow response to the crisis.

"We challenge the Presidency to come out clean on issues surrounding this abduction". The security forces are leaving no stone unturned in their search for the girls.

"We began jubilating but the story of the rescue turned out to be false", one of the parents, Adamu Alhaji-Deri, said.

The Federal Government delegation, which comprised the Ministers of Information and Culture as well as that of Interior, Lt. -Gen.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has again blamed the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Buhari government for the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Dapchi, Yobe state. "'These are the schoolgirls, ' I told myself", he said.

It said the administration caused the incident as the military was withdrawn prior to the abdudction.

"As they passed by me, I saw the girls".

A second Russian Olympian has failed a doping test
The athletes allowed to come to Pyeongchang are competing as neutrals under the name Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAS). They have been unable to wear national uniforms or have the Russian anthem played at medal ceremonies.

Dapchi is the headquarters of Bursari Local Government Area of Yobe State. The statement also said it was unclear whether the students were abducted by the militants. If the various authorities had done the needful more diligently and faithfully, the back and forth between the state government and the military over security lapses before the incident and the rescue operation would have been entirely unnecessary.

Then, late Wednesday, the state's governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, announced that the missing girls had been rescued.

"We did not listen to them and continued running".

Although the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari seems to be managing the optics better, having learnt from the ugly experience of the past, there is no sign that it is doing anything different.

The least we should expect to have been learnt from Chibok is the imperative of harmonising and processing official information and statistical detailing for concerted dissemination. The point here is: couldn't effective intelligence have headed off such large-scale attack or, at least, interrupt it much earlier than was the case in Dapchi? "This reminds us to be on guard". The government should just produce our girls.

"We've been living in anguish since we found out", he said. Police arrested as many as five people - two of whom are uncles of missing girls, residents said.
