Killed in Hong Kong's Deadliest Bus Accident in More Than a Decade

At least 19 dead after bus topples over in Hong Kong

A police spokesman said three women and 15 men were killed in the accident.

While some passengers escaped the accident unscathed, others were seen covered in blood and some had to be carried out from the bus wreckage on stretchers after firemen cut open the top of the bus.

Local media reports quoted passengers as saying the crowded vehicle tipped over after it had been traveling too fast. "And then it was like the tyres skidded, and the bus overturned". It was really chaotic in the bus.

The 872 bus was flipped on its side while travelling from Sha Tin racecourse to Tai Po Centre at around 6pm local time packed with punters who had spent a day at the races.

"(The driver was) intentionally using the bus to throw a tantrum", another injured passenger told the Oriental Daily.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Separately in Indonesia, at least 27 people died when a bus carrying domestic tourists crashed on the island of Java, police said yesterday.

A spokesman from the bus company, The Kowloon Motor Bus company, said HK$80,000 (£7,300) would be paid to each victim's family.

The driver had been with the company since 2014 and was familiar with the route on which the accident happened.

The safety of Hong Kong's waterways has also remained under scrutiny since 39 people were killed when a high-speed ferry and a pleasure boat crashed in 2012.
