Austrian snowboarder breaks bone in neck after horror crash

Austrian snowboarder Markus Schairer had a frightening few moments during the snowboard cross quarterfinals at the Olympics on Thursday.

Schairer was examined at a nearby hospital shortly after the contest concluded, where the Austrian Olympic committee ruled he had broken the fifth cervical vertebrae in his neck.

Austrian snowboarder Markus Schairer just broke his neck from a horrific crash during an Olympic event, and a slow-mo video caught the devastating moment.

Markus Schairer, 30, was gliding down a slope at Bokwang Snow Park in Pyeongchang, South Korea, during the men's snowboard cross quarterfinals when he seemingly lost control mid-air. The Express claim that he is expected to return to Austria imminently to receive further treatment.

Schairer, running in fourth place heading into the penultimate jump, landed on his back. Schairer also injured his elbow during an earlier run in the 2018 Winter Games.
